Modding your Chainsaw case
.
The old 1978 Gibson Protector case – a modification
If you’re like me and simply LOVE these old late-70′s Gibson Protector (nick-named Chainsaw) cases, yes I have been able to mod them for Electric Gypsy use. After the mod, the original Gibson guitar will still fit.
The EG is simply too long to fit, but the extra space required is so small that I find I can easily create it. Here’s how I do this:
- I pry loose the red interior at the point where there are two rubber blocks on each side of the butt strap button. I use a large flat screwdriver and do this carefully so that the cloth doesn’t rip or tear.
- Then, I unwind the cloth from the two rubber blocks – these look like big white erasers. I remove the two blocks.
- Using a band- or hacksaw, I cut both blocks in half as shown in fig. 1
- Using only half the blocks, I glue everything back in place, or use double-stick tape. Whatever method I use, I always VENT OUT THE CASE for a week before trying to put any guitar in it, because the glue fumes WILL damage many a guitars’ finish.

When you decide to do this or any mod, you are totally completely on your own as far as possible consequences to the case, to the guitar, or to your clothes, tools, or body. I have only told you how I personally modify my old Gibson Chainsaw cases to fit my EG guitars.
