Modding your Chainsaw case
.
The old 1978 Gibson Protector case – a modification
If you’re like me and simply LOVE these old late-70′s Gibson Protector (nick-named Chainsaw) cases, yes you can easily mod them for Electric Gypsy use. After the mod, your Gibson will still fit.
The EG is simply too long to fit, but the extra space required is so small that you can easily create it. Here’s how:
- Pry loose the red interior at the point where there are two rubber blocks on each side of the butt strap button. I use a large flat screwdriver. Do this carefully so that the cloth doesn’t rip or tear.
- Unwind the cloth from the two rubber blocks – these look like big white erasers. Remove the two blocks.
- Using a hacksaw, cut both blocks in half as shown in fig. 1
- Using only half the blocks, glue everything back in place. You can use double-stick tape too. Whatever method you use, make sure you VENT OUT THE CASE for a week before trying to put your guitar in it. The glue fumes WILL damage your guitars’ finish.

When you do this mod, you are on your own as far as possible consequences. It is only posted here to provide a basic idea of how you can make your old Gibson Chainsaw case fit the EG.
